Who it's a good fit for?

The Software Development Technician Level 3 Apprenticeship can be applied to a variety of job roles. These include Junior Application Developer, Junior Application Support Analyst, Junior Programmer, Junior Software Developer and Junior Web Developer.

Completing the Software Development Technician Level 3 Apprenticeship will allow learners to work across a number of industries. For example, a software development technician that works in the transport industry might provide support with transport ticketing systems, traffic light control systems, customer-facing websites for journey planning and internal websites for monitoring the status of train and road networks.

What are the entry requirements?

Apprentices without level 2 English and maths will need to achieve this level prior to taking the End-Point Assessment. For those with an education, health and care plan or a legacy statement, the apprenticeship’s English and maths minimum requirement is Entry Level 3. A British Sign Language (BSL) qualification is an alternative to the English qualification for those whose primary language is BSL.

A Software Development Technician typically works as a junior member of a software development team, accompanied with the responsibility of building simple software components. These are usually web, mobile or desktop applications and are used by other members of the team as part of larger software development projects or by end users.

The Software Development Technician Level 3 Apprenticeship will enable learners to become more proficient in their software development role. As they progress through the apprenticeship, learners can expect to take on an increasing amount of responsibilities. This includes implementing code and testing a specific component to ensure it meets its intended functionality. Learners in this role should be prepared to work independently on projects, or as part of the wider team.
